Portuguese Settlement (Kampung Portugis)
The Portuguese Settlement, locally known as Kampung Portugis or Portuguese Square (Medan Portugis), is a unique cultural enclave that is home to the descendants of Portuguese colonists who arrived in Melaka in the 16th century. Established in the 1930s, this settlement preserves the distinctive Kristang culture – a blend of Portuguese and local traditions that has evolved over 500 years. The community maintains its Catholic faith, Portuguese-influenced cuisine, traditional dances, and a creole language called Kristang. The settlement is centered around a square lined with seafood restaurants serving Portuguese-Eurasian specialties like devil curry, Portuguese baked fish, and various grilled seafood dishes. The area comes alive during festivals, particularly the Feast of San Pedro (Saint Peter's Feast) in June, when the community celebrates with processions, traditional music, and dances like the branyo and farapeira. A visit to the settlement offers insights into this resilient community's history, traditions, and culinary heritage, representing one of the living legacies of Melaka's colonial past.
