Uçhisar Castle

Highest point rock formation with panoramic views.

Uçhisar Castle stands as the highest point in Cappadocia, rising 60 meters above the village of Uçhisar. This natural rock formation has been carved and modified over centuries to create a fortress-like structure that served as a strategic military outpost and residential area. The castle offers breathtaking panoramic views of the entire Cappadocia region, including the Göreme Valley, Ortahisar, and the distant Mount Erciyes.

The structure is honeycombed with tunnels, rooms, and passages that were used by various civilizations throughout history. Early Christians used the castle as a defensive refuge, carving churches, chapels, and living quarters into the rock. The castle's strategic location made it an ideal watchtower for spotting approaching enemies, and its elevated position allowed defenders to communicate with other settlements through signal fires. Today, visitors can climb to various levels of the castle to experience the same commanding views that ancient inhabitants once enjoyed, making it one of the most popular spots for sunset viewing in Cappadocia.
