Galata Tower

Medieval tower offering panoramic Istanbul city views

Galata Tower stands as one of Istanbul's most recognizable landmarks, dominating the skyline north of the Golden Horn. Originally built by the Genoese in 1348 as part of their fortifications around their settlement in Constantinople, the tower served various purposes throughout history including as a fire watchtower during the Ottoman period. At 67 meters tall, it was the city's tallest structure for centuries and continues to be a prominent feature of Istanbul's silhouette.

The tower's strategic location in the Galata district provides visitors with unparalleled 360-degree views of Istanbul, encompassing the Historic Peninsula, Bosphorus, Golden Horn, and the city's seven hills. The panoramic restaurant and observation deck on the upper floors offer spectacular vistas, particularly during sunset when the city is bathed in golden light. The tower's interior houses exhibitions about its history and the development of Istanbul over the centuries.

The surrounding Galata neighborhood has evolved into a trendy area filled with art galleries, boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants. Visitors often combine their tower visit with exploring the vibrant streets of Galata, including the famous Galata Bridge and the nearby modern art museums.
