Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)

Historic covered market with thousands of shops

The Grand Bazaar stands as one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, serving as a vibrant commercial hub for over 550 years. Constructed in the 15th century during the Ottoman period, this architectural marvel covers 61 covered streets and houses approximately 4,000 shops, making it one of the most visited tourist attractions globally. The bazaar's labyrinthine structure creates an enchanting shopping experience where traditional craftsmanship meets modern commerce.

Within the Grand Bazaar's walls, visitors can discover an incredible variety of goods including Turkish carpets, jewelry, leather goods, spices, ceramics, and antiques. Many shops are organized by trade, with streets dedicated to specific crafts such as goldsmithing, carpet weaving, and leather working. The bazaar's architecture features beautiful vaulted ceilings, ornate decorations, and fountains that create a unique atmosphere.

Beyond shopping, the Grand Bazaar serves as a cultural experience where visitors can observe traditional haggling practices, enjoy Turkish tea with shopkeepers, and witness skilled
artisans at work. The bazaar also houses several restaurants, cafes, and historic buildings including the Old Bedesten, which served as the market's original core.
