Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı)

Colorful Ottoman-era market famous for spices and Turkish delights

Built in 1664 as part of the New Mosque complex, the Spice Bazaar is the most colorful, fragrant, and often the most fun of Istanbul's covered bazaars. This L-shaped market consists of 88 shops selling an incredible variety of spices, herbs, teas, Turkish delight, dried fruits, nuts, and traditional remedies. The bazaar earned its name from being built with revenues from Ottoman Egypt, and visitors can sample many products before purchasing.

The sensory experience is overwhelming in the best possible way - the vibrant colors of turmeric, paprika, and saffron create a visual feast, while the aromatic blend of cinnamon, cardamom, and other exotic spices fills the air. Beyond spices, the market offers high-quality Turkish delight in dozens of flavors, premium Turkish coffee, and unique souvenirs. The vendors are knowledgeable about their products and often provide cooking tips and usage instructions for international visitors.
