Lyabi-Hauz, meaning "around the pool," represents one of Bukhara's most charming and atmospheric locations, centered around a rectangular artificial pond (hauz) constructed in 1620 by the city's vizier Nadir Divan-Begi. This historic ensemble serves as the heart of medieval Bukhara's social and commercial life, surrounded by magnificent architectural monuments including madrasahs, mosques, and khanaqas that create a harmonious urban composition.
The complex encompasses three major architectural monuments: the Kukeldash Madrasah (the largest in Bukhara), the Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah with its famous phoenix motifs, and the Nadir Divan-Begi Khanaqah. The central hauz, measuring 36 by 46 meters, was fed by a canal system and served as the main water reservoir for this quarter of the city.
Today, the square around the pond has been transformed into a pleasant pedestrian area lined with traditional chaikhanas (teahouses), restaurants, and craft shops, making it a perfect place to experience authentic Uzbek hospitality while admiring the stunning medieval
architecture reflected in the tranquil waters.
