Muar, known as the "Royal Town" and famously called Bandar Maharani (Empress Town), is one of Johor's most historically significant settlements with a heritage that dates back over 500 years. The Muar Heritage Trail encompasses the historic core of this riverside town, which served as an important trading port and administrative center during the Johor Sultanate and British colonial periods. The trail showcases a remarkable collection of well-preserved colonial buildings, traditional shophouses, royal buildings, and religious structures that represent various architectural styles and cultural influences that have shaped Muar's identity over the centuries.

The heritage trail includes significant landmarks such as the Masjid Jamek Sultan Ibrahim with its distinctive Moorish architecture, the historic Muar High School building, traditional Chinese shophouses along Jalan Petrie and Jalan Ali, colonial administrative buildings, and the scenic Muar River waterfront area. The town's strategic location along the Muar River made it an important commercial hub, and many of the historic buildings reflect the prosperity and cultural diversity of its trading community. The trail also includes stops at traditional eateries, cultural sites, and viewpoints along the river where visitors can appreciate the town's natural setting. Muar's heritage trail offers visitors an authentic experience of a traditional Malaysian town that has successfully preserved its historical character while adapting to modern needs, making it an excellent destination for cultural tourism and historical education.
