Museum of Anatolian Civilizations (Anadolu Medeniyetleri Müzesi)
The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations is located on the south side of Ankara Castle in the Atpazarı area in Ankara, Turkey. It consists of the old Ottoman Mahmut Paşa bazaar storage building, and the Kurşunlu Han. This world-renowned museum houses one of the richest collections of Hittite and Anatolian artifacts in the world, spanning from the Paleolithic era to the Classical period. The museum was established in 1921 and has since become Turkey's most important archaeological museum.
The museum's collection includes remarkable artifacts from various Anatolian civilizations including the Hittites, Phrygians, Lydians, and Romans. Among its most treasured possessions are Hittite cuneiform tablets, Phrygian fibulae, and exquisite examples of ancient Anatolian art and craftsmanship. The building itself is a masterpiece of Ottoman civil architecture, restored and adapted to serve as a museum while preserving its historical character. In 1997, the museum was awarded the European Museum of the Year Award, recognizing its outstanding contribution to cultural heritage preservation and presentation.
