Ulugh Beg Madrasah

Oldest preserved madrasah in Central Asia from 15th century.

The Ulugh Beg Madrasah stands as the oldest surviving madrasah in Central Asia and represents a pivotal moment in the region's educational and architectural history. Built in 1417 by Ulugh Beg, the grandson of the great conqueror Tamerlane and a renowned astronomer and mathematician in his own right, this madrasah established the template for Islamic educational architecture that would be followed throughout the region for centuries.

This rectangular two-story structure, measuring 56 by 47 meters, was designed to house both residential quarters for students and lecture halls for Islamic studies, mathematics, and astronomy. The madrasah's facade features a magnificent portal decorated with geometric patterns and Arabic calligraphy, while the courtyard is surrounded by hujras (student cells) that provided accommodation for scholars from across the Islamic world. What makes this madrasah particularly significant is that it represents Ulugh Beg's commitment to learning and scientific inquiry, reflecting the high intellectual standards of the Timurid period.

The building pioneered many architectural elements that became standard in later Central Asian madrasahs, including the four-iwan plan and the integration of residential and educational spaces. Today, the restored madrasah houses exhibitions about medieval Islamic education and Bukhara's scholarly traditions.
