War of Independence Museum (Kurtuluş Savaşı Müzesi)

Historic building documenting Turkey's struggle for independence.

The War of Independence Museum, housed in the first building of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, represents one of the most sacred sites in Turkish political history. This modest building served as the seat of Turkey's first parliament from 1920 to 1924, during the critical years of the Turkish War of Independence. It was here that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his fellow deputies planned and executed the strategies that would lead to the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. The building itself is a testament to the humble beginnings of the Turkish Republic, demonstrating how a small group of determined leaders could reshape the destiny of a nation.

The museum meticulously preserves the original assembly hall exactly as it appeared during those historic sessions, complete with the simple wooden furniture and basic facilities that characterized this crucial period. Visitors can see the chair where Atatürk presided over the assembly, the deputies' desks, and the gallery where observers witnessed the birth of modern Turkey. The exhibits include original documents, photographs, personal belongings of key figures, and detailed displays explaining the chronology of events during the War of Independence. The museum serves not only as a historical repository but as a symbol of democratic governance and national sovereignty, reminding visitors of the principles upon which the Turkish Republic was founded.
